CALL FOR PAPERS

Proposals due February 15, 2009

The Association for Political Theory (APT) invites proposals for its seventh annual conference to be held October 22–24, 2009 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The APT is an interdisciplinary organization devoted to supporting political theory and political philosophy. We recognize that scholars in a range of disciplines are doing important critical work on social and political questions. We welcome their participation in this conference. The APT Conference provides a collegial setting for scholars of various professional ranks, institutional affiliations and theoretical approaches to engage one another in fruitful discussions of their work. To learn more about the Association and its annual conference, please visit the APT Gateway website.

The Association welcomes paper proposals from all approaches and on all topics in political theory, political philosophy, and the history of political thought, from faculty, advanced PhD candidates, and independent scholars. We encourage faculty to apply to serve as chairs or discussants. To ensure broad participation and the serious attention of chairs and discussants to their duties, we strongly encourage faculty who are not proposing papers to volunteer to participate in one of those roles.

Applicants may propose panels and roundtable discussions as well, but because of the relatively small size of the conference, and because we encourage significant interaction among participants of different academic ranks, from different types of institutions, and from different approaches to political theory or philosophy, we accept few whole traditional panel proposals (although we do encourage nontraditional format proposals). The program committee will evaluate every panel proposal as such, and each of its component papers as individual proposals. We may (1) accept a panel and all its papers as proposed, (2) accept the panel, but alter it by rejecting one or more of its component papers and/or including one or more other papers submitted separately, or (3) reject a proposed panel, but accept some or even all of its component papers and recombine them into other panels.

Space limitations may restrict the number of proposals we accept. For the 2008 conference, 280 proposals were submitted, with 116 (about 41%) accepted.

APPLYING TO PARTICIPATE

To propose a paper, panel, or roundtable, or to apply to serve as a chair or discussant, apply online at the APT Gateway website. Click on “APT Conferences” and follow the links to the application forms and general information about the 2009 conference. Proposals are due February 15, 2009. Please review the full set of proposal guidelines before completing an application form.

The proposal requires an abstract of three to four hundred words and a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae (the latter can be attached as a file to the submission form). Applicants may indicate whether they prefer to participate in a traditional panel, a roundtable, or another proposed format. Graduate students should note their status, ABD or pre-ABD. Participants at previous APT conferences should only submit new proposals significantly different from their past contributions.

Program chairs will notify applicants of Program Committee decisions by April 15, 2009.

PARTICIPATING IN THE CONFERENCE

PRE-CIRCULATION REQUIREMENT: Accepted participants must submit their completed papers to a password-protected archive on the APT website no later than October 1, 2009. The program chairs will remove from the program any papers not submitted by the deadline.
